The Need for Default Username and Password

• You lost or forgot your password
• Someone changed the router’s password
• You want to customize the wireless LAN wifi name or SSID name
• You prefer to hide the wifi name
• You want to change the wifi password
• You intend to limit devices connecting to the router by using MAC address filtering
• You need to change the IP address of the router because your existing network is on another subnet and not 192.168.1.0
• You must disable the router’s DHCP server since there is another DHCP server on the network
• You like to host your own website and therefore you need to enable the Dynamic Domain Name Server (DDNS) feature of the router
• Your video game requires you to enable port forwarding

For me, I started looking for the default username and password of PLDT routers as soon as the technician installing the router left. This was because I was annoyed by the router’s long wireless LAN SSID names. Not only that, the corresponding default passwords for the wifi were similarly long.

PLDT routers use a very long WLAN SSID name which is composed of the word “PLDTHOMEFIBR” appended with the five (5) digits of the MAC address of the router. For my router, the SSID name of the 2.4 Ghz wifi is “PLDTHOMEFIBR2b288” and its default password is “PLDTHOMEFIBRs5cfe”. The 5Ghz wifi SSID name is even longer, “PLDTHOMEFIBR5G2B288”.

MAC stands for Media Access Control. Every network device has a unique global identifier called a MAC address. It is a 12-digit number usually written as a set of six hexadecimal numbers separated by a colon. An example MAC address is 5C:3C:27:02:B2:88.

Therefore, if you want to make some changes to the router’s configuration, you need to access the router’s configuration web page. The configuration web page will ask you for a username and a password before it will allow you to make any setting changes to the router.

PLDT Routers User and Admin Accounts

Generally, routers use two (2) separate accounts for changing their configurations. A user account and an admin account. A user account is usually an account that has limited access to the router’s configuration. It will allow you to make very basic configuration changes to the router. However, an admin account is usually provided that gives you full access to a vast set of router configuration options.

But let me emphasize that although routers generally have a user and an admin account with entirely different configuration privileges, everything depends on the internet service provider (ISP). It depends on how protective the ISP is of their router’s configuration. Some ISP, notably Globe on their new fiber routers, provide a default user account that has access to all the configuration options of the router. In contrast, PLDT is so protective of their fiber router configuration that the user account that is provided has a very limited set of configuration options. Furthermore, PLDT’s admin account is disabled by default. In order to enable the admin account which has full access to the router’s configuration, you will need to know a third Super Admin account to unlock the admin account.

PLDT’s is over-protecting its home fiber router configuration. There are stories on the net about PLDT customers who asked for the admin and superadmin default username and password of their PLDT routers. They were required to sign for a waiver that PLDT is not responsible for any consequences that may arise from the customer’s tinkering with the configuration. Moreover, PLDT does not only try to keep the default username and password for the admin accounts secret, they also keep on changing the admin passwords.

If you are unable to login into the router’s configuration web page, you may need to reset the router to its default factory configuration. The default usernames and passwords listed below are only applicable to routers which have not been previously configured or previously been reset to its factory default configuration.
